This initiative focuses on collaboration with UN agencies, particularly in light of the recent lifting of sanctions on Syria.

Al-Halabi commended Pedersen’s efforts in lifting sanctions on Syria, pointing out the possibility of cooperation and partnership with organizations to tackle challenges and develop higher education.

Al-Halabi said “the ministry has enacted a law criminalizing hatred speech, taken measures to hold those responsible for the mobilization that took place in some universities accountable”.

Pedersen, for his part, apprecaited US President Donald Trump’s swift move to lift sanctions on Syria, and for his discussions with President Ahmad al-Sharaa. Pederson expressed his optimism that this step could truly foster stability and growth in Syria and help revive academic liberty and scientific transparency.

Pedersen praised the ministry’s decision to criminalize hate speech and sectarian incitement, its efforts in strengthening the Syrian social structure, the rapid steps it has taken for students in Sweida governorate and the Syrian coast.
