Daraa governor: 23 residential compounds deprived of drinking water due to terrorist attacks

Daraa, SANA – Daraa governor Mohammad Khaled al-Hannous affirmed Wednesday that terrorist attacks on water sources and electricity supply lines in the western part of Daraa province have deprived 23 residential compounds of drinking water.

During his meeting with a delegation from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), al-Hannous underlined the role of international organizations in supporting the water, sanitation and relief sectors.

The governor expressed the governorate’s readiness to facilitate the organizations’ work to carry out their duties in the best way.

He clarified that the eastern and northern areas in Daraa are suffering from “literal thirst” which prompted the governorate to exert “gigantic efforts” to provide the residential compounds with water.

For his part, Issam Ismail, the National Program Officer at WFP pointed out that the WFP has devised a plan to support Daraa with 40 thousand food packages, adding that WFP is ready to send 10 thousand immediately.

Ismail noted that WFP has allocated aid for schoolchildren with high rates of school dropout to help them improve their health.

Dr. Ahmad al-Masalima, head of Daraa branch of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) stressed the importance of increasing aid offered by international organization to meet citizens’ needs.

Following the meeting, the delegation visited relief aid distribution centers in Daraa city and several water wells.
