Damascus, SANA – President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday evening attended a religious celebration marking the Prophet Mohammad’s birth anniversary at Ebad al-Rahman Mosque in Kafar Souseh area in Damascus.
The ceremony began with recital of Quran verses by sheikh Salim Abdo al-Aqqad, evening prayers were performed led by sheikh Hussam-Eddin Farfour, and Religious Endowments (Awqaf) Minister Mohammad Abdelsattar al-Sayyed gave a speech.
Al-Sayyed said that Prophet Mohammad liberated the mind, fought superstition, brought justice to women, and ended the tribalism and customs that existed during the pre-Islam days.
The Minister said that Syria today is fighting extremists and confronting with its moderate interpretation of Islam those who promote the perverted Wahabism, adding that now the society has become aware of the difference between being religious and being a fanatic.
The event was concluded by supplications from Director of Damascus Countryside Religious Endowments Department Khedr Shahrour, who prayed to God to preserve and aid Syria and its army and people, to protect Syria from its enemies, and to make it safe and tranquil.
