Finals of the national competition of the World Robot Olympiad kick off in Damascus

Damascus, SANA – The finals of the 2016 national competition of the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) kicked off on Friday at al-Jalaa Sports Complex in Damascus, with the participation of 73 teams from across the country.

The event, which is organized by the Syrian Computer Society (SCS) and Syriatel, will continue its activities through Friday and Saturday, and the winning teams will qualify for the WRO competition due to be held in India.

The competition is divided into three categories according to age group: the 10 to 12 category is titled “cleaning the road to school,” the 13 to 15 category is titled “sorting waste,” and the 16 to 19 is titled “recycling waste.” There are also advanced three other events: the “robot bowler” event for ages 17 to 25, the football event for ages 10 to 19, and the open event category for ages 10 to 19.

The 73 participating teams are from the clubs at the SCS branches in Damascus, Homs, Lattakia, Hama, Tartous, and Sweida along with the faculties of mechanical engineering, electric engineering, IT, and applied sciences at Damascus University, in addition to Yarmouk University, International Science and Technology University, the Higher Institute for Applied Science and Technology, the National Center for Distinguished Students, the Damascus UNRWA Institute, al-Hadara Institute, Sawa School, al-Wataniya School, Dar al-Rahma orphanage, and Lahn al-Hayat association.

Syria became an official member of the WRO in 2015 after approving the applciaiton submitted by the SCS as Syria’s representative.
