De Mistura welcomes Russian humanitarian initiative in Aleppo and calls for improving it

Geneva, SANA-UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said that the UN welcomes any initiative aimed at assisting the civilian population.

“We are in principle and we are in practice in favor of humanitarian corridors under the right circumstances that allow the protection of civilians. Therefore we have been studying with great attention and interest the Russian initiative that was sketched yesterday,” de Mistura told reporters on Friday.

In turn, Alexei Borodavkin, Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva said Moscow would “carefully study” de Mistura’s comments and take them into account for improvements to its humanitarian operation in Aleppo.
