Parliament speakers of Syria and Iraq discuss anti-terrorism cooperation

Baghdad, SANA – Speaker of the People’s Assembly Mohammad Jihad al-Laham stressed the importance of Syria-Iraq cooperation in fighting terrorism.

Both countries are facing common challenges and share a common destiny, said al-Laham during a meeting with his Iraqi counterpart Salim al-Jabouri on the sidelines of the 11th session of the Conference of Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Member States (PUIC) held in Baghdad.

“It is of significance that cooperation [with Iraq] be bolstered in various fields, particularly in fighting terrorism and extremism fed by some regional and Western government,” added al-Laham, voicing appreciation of Iraq’s anti-terrorism efforts.

The Iraqi Parliament’ speaker, for his part, highlighted the importance of holding direct meetings between Syria and Iraq and discussing the challenges of terrorism, especially in relation to ISIS organization.

The importance of regional coordination against terrorism was reiterated by al-Laham during a meeting with al-Jabouri’s deputy Humam Hamoudi, hailing in particular the Syrian-Iraqi-Iranian cooperation in this regard.

Hamoudi noted that the Syrian-Iraqi cooperation will contribute to thwarting the Israeli entity’s plots against the region’s countries and peoples.

Al-Laham is heading a delegation to the meetings of PUIC between the 20th and 25th of this month.
