Zarif: It is up to the UN and not Saudi FM to determine Syrian opposition delegation to Geneva

Davos, SANA – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif affirmed that determining the names of the Syrian opposition delegation to the talks with the Syrian government in Geneva is up to the UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura and not the Saudi Foreign Minister.

In a press conference on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Zarif said the Syrian opposition delegation should not include representatives of terrorist organizations, noting that ten al-Qaeda-linked members attended the opposition meeting in Riyadh last month.

Zarif stressed that there is no military solution to the crisis in Syria, pointing out that it is unreasonable to put preconditions or come up with expected results before the talks start.

The Saudi foreign minister Adel al-Jubeir announced on Tuesday rejection of what he called “any external pressure” that may be exerted on the Syrian opposition about the formation of its delegation to the talks.
