Moscow, SANA – Russian Minister of the Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif stressed the importance of eliminating terrorism in Syria and preserving its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
During a joint press conference in Moscow on Tuesday, Lavrov asserted the need for the international community to support the efforts of reconstruction in Syria and providing humanitarian aid far away from politicizing.
Lavrov called for applying the Astana agreements on settling the crisis in Syria, confronting terrorism, preserving the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
For his part, Zarif asserted the necessity of continuing work in the framework of the Astana formula to resolve the crisis in Syria, noting that the presidents of the three guarantor states (Russia, Iran, and Turkey) will hold a meeting soon via video conference.
He pointed out that the Western states use their “humanitarian principles” to carry out their political agendas, stressing the need for international cooperation regarding the humanitarian situation in Syria and providing humanitarian aid to those who deserve it away from any politicization.
Zarif had clarified at the beginning of his meeting with Lavrov that the US continues to destabilize the situation in Syria and the region, and that its decision to impose more coercive economic measures that affect the Syrian people is cause for concern, adding “we have to make sure that Washington does not achieve its goals.”
