“Syria will spare no effort to confront this epidemic as the country has joined international treaties relevant to combating drugs,” the Minister affirmed.

He added that Syria has taken a number of active procedures since more than two decades, most importantly, law No. 2 of 1993 which is considered as one of the most important laws internationally because it set deterrent penalties against drug smugglers, manufacturers and traffickers which could reach capital punishment.

“Anti-drugs department has been able to seize a number of smuggling gangs and the number of cases in this regard has reached 1817 since the beginning of this year and different kinds of drugs, like Hashish, Heroine, Cocaine and Captagon have been confiscated,” al-Sha’ar said.

The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is a United Nations International Day against drug abuse and the illegal drug trade. It has been held annually since 1988 on 26 June.

A dialogue symposium was also held in Damascus on Wednesday by Information Ministry, in cooperation with Interior Ministry, on the occasion of World anti-Drug day.
