Damascus, SANA – Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Sleiman al-Abbas said that Syrian territorial waters have high hydrocarbon potential due to the existence of vital geological features and a diversity of potential resources.
In a lecture on Saturday at the Syrian Private University, al-Abbas said that the Levant Basin which extends into Syrian territorial waters has evidence of petroleum in beach areas and contains three sedimentary basins where resources have been discovered.
The Minister reviewed statistics and data on prospects of petroleum and gas production in Syria’s waters, as well as the general condition of the petroleum and gas sector and strategic visions for regional cooperation in this regard.
He underlined the effects of the current crisis in Syria on the petroleum and has sector in Syria, which included the cessation of excavation and exploration activities as well as development efforts, noting that workers in this sector have been subjected to murder, abduction, and displacement, with 172 workers killed, 118 injured, and 88 abducted, in addition to the fact that qualified and trained staff have left work areas to safer areas.
