Damascus, SANA – The People’s Assembly on Thursday listened to the answers of Agriculture and Water Resources ministries given to queries by PMs on issues related to the situation of water and crops subsidy in certain areas.
High among those issues were the necessity to specify and continue subsidizing strategic crops given the water scarcity of water and financially support farmers who have been affected by the increase in oil prices.
MPs called for drawing up plans and studies to avoid a water shortage crisis in Aleppo province with the advent of summer and drilling new wells to meet the demands.
Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform Ahmad al-Qadiri said in his answers that the Ministry is working with several parties concerned to ensure the marketing of non-strategic agricultural products, a step he said is important to positively reflecting on the living conditions of farmers.
He noted that all strategic crops are covered by the government’s subsidy policy.
For his part, Water Resources Minister Kamal al-Sheikha stressed that the Ministry has already set up emergency plans to tackle the water problem in Aleppo, Idleb and Daraa provinces.
