Two Syrian children killed in fire at Zaatari Camp in Jordan

Amman, SANA- Two Syrian children were killed after a fire erupted in one of tents used by the displaced Syrians residing at Zaatari Camp in Jordan on Sunday, in an event that is not unprecedented in the camp in which residents suffer greatly due to its lack of the simplest requirements for decent human life.

Agence France-Presse (AFP) quoted the director of al-Mafraq Hospital Samir al-Mashaqba as saying that a one-year-old boy and his sister who was two and a half years old were killed and three members of their family were severely burned when fire erupted in their tent at Zaatari Camp in al-Mafraq province in the north of Jordan near to Syrian borders.

A source at Jordanian Civil Defense said that the fire was caused by children playing with a candle.

This was not the first accident of this kind to take place in the camp; last year a fire burned down 35 tents with no serious human injures, with those in charge of the camp saying at that time that the fire was caused by residents “messing around.”

Syrians staying in the Camp endure tragic living conditions, and the Jordanian authorities prevent them from leaving it.

The Syrian government has repeatedly called upon civilians who left the country to return, assuring them that they will be provided with shelter, care, and the necessities of decent life, and many of Syrians who were in the camp returned to Syria.
