Firefighters control a fire in Qastal Maaf, Latakia

Latakia, SANA-The Syrian Fire and Civil Defense teams are battling to combat the widespread fire that broke out in the Qastal Maaf area in the Latakia countryside and many families were evacuated.

Abdul Kafi Kayal, Director of the Disaster and Emergency Directorate in Latakia Governorate, pointed out that there are a number of challenges hindering suppression operations, most notably: the spread of mines and unexploded projectiles in the region, in addition to the difficulty of reaching fire spots, and the speed of the winds that contributed to the fires moving to forests.

Kayal expressed his hope to achieve a good control rate in the coming hours with the arrival of support, explaining that the priority now is to prevent the fire from reaching populated villages ‘’.

He pointed out that the fire consumed large areas of forests, which necessitated the evacuation of many families in the villages of Ramadi, Bir al-Qasab, Zanzaf, and al-Basit in order to preserve their safety.

Kayal also called on civilians to cooperate with field teams, report any fire that may occur, and refrain from setting fires in forests to avoid a repeat of the disaster we face today.
