Japan lifts sanctions and freezes assets of four Syrian banks

Tokyo, SANA-The Japanese government has decided to partially lift sanctions it had imposed on Syria with the aim of supporting peaceful transitional process and the efforts of the Syrian government to rebuild the country.
Japanese NHK TV said that The Japanese Cabinet agreed on the move at its meeting on Friday, were Four banks will be removed from the list of targets whose assets are frozen.

Kyodo News agency quoted Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi Yoshimasa  as saying to reporters that lifting the freeze on the assets of certain institutions in Syria is necessary at a time when the country is seeking to emerge from the crisis under the leadership of the new Syrian government.

Japanese official articulated that the decision was taken based on the Japanese government’s view of the necessity of participating in supporting positive efforts in Syria, in coordination with the international community and to help improve the lives of the Syrian people exhausted by the long war.

Hayashi added: “Japan will continue to coordinate with the Group of Seven countries and others in the international community in an effort to take effective measures to achieve peace and stability in Syria.”
