Cairo, April 12 (SANA) – Arab Parliament Speaker Mohamed Ahmed al-Yammahi sent urgent letters on Sunday to several international bodies calling for immediate action to stop implementation of a law adopted by the Israeli occupation allowing the execution of Palestinian prisoners.
According to the Arab Parliament’s official website, al-Yammahi addressed letters to the UN Secretary-General, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, as well as heads of regional and international parliaments.
The letters called for swift and decisive international action to halt implementation of the law and hold those responsible accountable before international justice.
Al-Yammahi stressed that adopting the law represents an unprecedented escalation in the repressive policies of the Israeli occupation, warning it paves the way for systematic executions of Palestinian prisoners under legislative cover.
He said the measure constitutes a flagrant violation of the Geneva Conventions, international humanitarian law, and international human rights treaties.
The Arab Parliament speaker also warned that any international silence or inaction toward the law would amount to direct complicity, granting the occupation authorities political cover to continue their violations.
Al-Yammahi called on the international community to assume its legal and moral responsibilities, including activating international accountability mechanisms, referring the case to competent judicial bodies, and providing immediate international protection for Palestinian prisoners.
He also renewed calls to suspend and freeze the membership of the Israeli Knesset in the Inter-Parliamentary Union and other parliamentary forums, stressing that the Arab Parliament will continue political and diplomatic efforts until the law is revoked and the Israeli occupation is held accountable for its crimes against Palestinian prisoners.
Israeli occupation authorities approved the law allowing the execution of Palestinian prisoners on March 30, after it was first proposed in 2022 by Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and passed a preliminary reading in March 2023.
