Washington, March 22 (SANA) U.S. President Donald Trump warned on Sunday that Iran has 48 hours to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping, saying the United States could carry out strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure if it is not reopened.
Trump said in a post on Truth Social that the United States would “hit and destroy” Iran’s power facilities “starting with the largest” if the strategic waterway is not reopened without conditions.
The warning marks a sharp escalation in tensions, as the Strait of Hormuz, a key artery for global oil supplies in the Middle East, remains effectively closed, disrupting maritime traffic and affecting energy markets.
The statement comes despite earlier remarks by Trump suggesting Washington could scale down military operations, indicating a shift toward increased pressure amid ongoing hostilities.
Iran has signaled it would retaliate against U.S. and allied infrastructure if attacked, raising concerns about a broader regional confrontation.
Tehran moved to restrict passage through the Strait following weeks of U.S. and Israeli strikes on its territory since late February, in what has become one of the most significant escalations in the region in recent years.
