Russian Defense Ministry: Lists provided by Washington don’t tell apart “moderate opposition” from terror organizations

Moscow, SANA – The Russian Defense Ministry said the US provided lists to Moscow that don not tell apart “moderate opposition” from terrorist organizations.

Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov said in a press conference on Friday that the Ministry managed to specify 8 factions affiliated to al-Nusra and 2 affiliated to ISIS after studying the list presented by Washington to Moscow on September 27th, noting that Moscow gave Washington one day before that a list of 47 factions of the so-called “moderate opposition” that had agreed to join the cessation of combat activities, and also provided accurate information about where those factions are active and where terrorists affiliated to al-Nusra are located.

On a relevant note, Antonov said during a meeting with the command of the Russian armed forces that the so-called moderate opposition supported by Washington exploited the cessation of combat activities to regroup, procure arms, and attack Syrian Army positions, with more than 100 terror groups continuing to carry out attacks in Syria.

He noted that the US failed to convince those it calls moderate opposition to abandon their unreasonable conditions.

Antonov also stated that more than 35,000 terrorists were killed in Syria between February 27 and September 1 in 2016, and more than 586 towns and over 12,000 square kilometers were liberated from terrorists.
