Damascus, SANA – Al-Wahda football team won the Republic Cup after defeating Al-Jaish 1-0 in the match held on Friday at Tishreen Stadium in Damascus.
The winning goal was scored by Mohammad al-Ghabbash at the 75 minutes mark with a header from a corner kick, earning Al-Wahda its six Republic Cup title in its history, and making up for losing the 2016 Syrian Premier League title to Al-Jaish recently.
The match was dominated by mediocre technical performance as both parties were playing in a very careful manner in fear of conceding an early goal, with play being mostly limited to midfield and closing defensive gaps, with the two teams’ goalies remaining mostly unchallenged despite a few sparse opportunities for both sides.
Al-Wahda won the title in 1993, 2003, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2016, while Al-Jaish won it a total of 9 times; in 1964, 1967, 1986, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2014.
