Moscow, SANA –The Russian Foreign Ministry reiterated on Thursday its support for the Syrian state in the face of terrorism, with Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova saying that Russia is concerned about the existence of Syria’s statehood and the forces that will be able to counter the terrorist threat on the ground.
In a press briefing, Zakharova stressed the necessity of cooperating in combating terrorism without any preconditions, adding that those who insist on any prerequisites “are thus pushing us towards playing into the hands of terrorists.”
She stated that if Syria falls to the terrorists’ onslaught, this will lead to grave consequences not only for the whole country but also for the region and Europe.
The spokeswoman said that armed groups led and controlled by militants from Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist organization and militants from other illegal groups continued their attacks on Syrian Army positions, adding “moreover, several groups of the moderate armed opposition are acting synchronously with terrorist groups.”
Zakharova renewed Russia’s call for separating the “opposition” from Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists, stressing that “in order to eliminate the hotbed of terrorism in Syria, it is necessary to differentiate clearly between armed opponents of the current authorities who reject terrorist methods and terrorists, including from Jabhat al-Nusra.”
