Matar: Meeting with Syrian Arab Republic delegation postponed because de Mistura wants to meet Riyadh delegation first

Geneva, SANA – Khawla Matar, spokesperson for UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, said that the talks between de Mistura and the Syrian Arab Republic delegation that were scheduled for noon on Monday in Geneva have been postponed.

In a statement to the press, Matar said meetings are being rescheduled because de Mistura wants to meet with the Riyadh opposition delegation before meeting the Syrian Arab Republic delegation again, adding that the meeting between the UN Special Envoy and the Riyadh delegation scheduled for Monday evening will be held as planned.

Later, UN sources said that de Mistura will hold a meeting with the Riyadh opposition delegation at 6:00 PM at UN headquarters in Geneva, and the meeting will be followed by a press conference by de Mistura.

Earlier, de Mistura met the Syrian Arab Republic delegation on Friday at the UN headquarters in Geneva, and on Sunday he met with the Riyadh delegation informally at a hotel in Geneva to convince its members to participate in dialogue without preconditions and to not undermine dialogue.

Earlier, UN sources said the meeting scheduled on Monday at 12:00 Damascus time between the delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic and de Mistura had been postponed.

“De Mistura will meet the delegation of Syrian Arab Republic at 12:00, then he will meet the opposition delegation at  18:00,” a statement by UN had stated.
