New psychological healthcare directorate established to meet needs prompted by crisis

Damascus, SANA – Ministry of Health announced Thursday the establishment of an independent directorate for psychological healthcare to better improve and upgrade social and psychological support services on the national level.

The newly-established directorate acquires an increasing importance in light of the current circumstances prompted by the ongoing crisis in the country that has taken a severe tall on all social, security and financial aspects of the citizens’ lives, not least their psychological health.

Minister Saad al-Nayef toured the new directorate, opened at al-Bassel Educational Compound in Damascus, and said in a statement to the reporters that the establishment of the new directorate came amid growing needs under the crisis and the Ministry’s efforts to meet those needs.

He noted that among the psychologically hardest hit by the current conditions in the country are children, teenagers, women and the elderly, who he said have been heavily affected.

The psychological healthcare directorate will have 16 branches in all the provinces, he pointed out.

Minister al-Nayef also stressed that work is underway to bring to fruition a national plan for psychological health in cooperation with public and civil parties and the international organizations concerned.

Part of the plan is work to qualify and train specialized medical cadres to be able to prescribe and provide the necessary non-medicinal psychological therapy, mainly to the most fragile categories in society.
