Russian officials: Serviceman in Syria killed himself for personal reasons

Moscow, SANA – The Russian General Military Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the Russian servicemen stationed at the Hmeimim airbase in Lattakia countryside had killed himself for personal, non-service related reasons.

The Office said on Wednesday that the forensic investigations confirmed the serviceman had committed suicide by hanging while off-duty.

In turn, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov said “the preliminary investigation has established the circumstances of his death that unequivocally testify to the fact that the suicide was caused by his breakup with a girl.”

He stressed that all the other alleged versions of the tragic death of the Russian contract serviceman, published by a number of Russian and especially foreign media outlets, are intentional insinuations and absolutely untrue.

A number of Russian military personnel are present at Hmeimim airbase, from which Russian aircrafts take off to conduct airstrikes on terrorist targets in Syria.

The Russian airstrikes started on September 30, and have destroyed over 1,100 terrorist targets so far, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.
