Moscow, SANA – Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated on Tuesday that Russia’s position on Syria is firm in terms of finding a political solution to the crisis there involving President Bashar al-Assad.
Peskov’s reiteration came in response to a statement issued by the White House on Monday.
Quoted by the Russian TASS news agency, he said Russian President Vladimir Putin affirmed in a phone call with his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama on June 25 this unshakable position of Russia on solving the crisis in Syria politically with President Bashar al-Assad involved.
Answering a question on the prospects of solving the crisis, Peskov said the two presidents exchanged views on this issue during the their phone conversation, adding that the Russian stance is very well known and was made quite clear by Putin.
Acting upon their presidents’ directives, Russian and U.S. foreign ministers held on June 30 a meeting where they analyzed in detail the prospects of the crisis in Syria, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Sergei Lavrov was reported to have stressed during his meeting with John Kerry that there could be no alternative to the political settlement in Syria, one that can be reached through the Syrian national forces and the international community working together to confront the terrorist organizations engulfing Syria and posing a threat to the regional and international
security.
Late last month, Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid al-Moallem visited Moscow and met with President Putin, who stressed that Russia will continue to firmly support Syria, both people and leadership, and that he was confident that the Syrian people will defeat terrorism.
