Indian Embassy in Damascus marks International Yoga Day

Damascus, SANA – The Indian Embassy in Damascus on Sunday marked International Yoga Day, which is celebrated on June 21, with an event held at Al-Jalaa Sports Complex in Damascus.

In a speech during the event, chargé d’affaires at the Indian Embassy S. R. Meena said that yoga is a gift from Indian tradition that embodies the unity between mind, body, thought, and action, and that it symbolizes harmony between humans and nature and is a comprehensive system for healthy life and well-being.

Meena said that the 199 members of the UN General Assembly backed the resolution to set June 21st as International Yoga Day in December of 2014, and that this decision also called for spreading awareness about the benefits of yoga.

For her part, representative of the Syrian Center for Yoga and Meditation Sana’a Ahmad underlined the need to spread the culture of yoga which has been adopted by many great figures in India throughout history, while yoga instructor Rambir Singh said that yoga is a spiritual system based on precise science, and that it seeks to create harmony between mind and body, in addition to being a practice that fights disease and improves health.

The event included sports performances and yoga practice by instructors Singh and Wissam Kheirbek.
