Al-Laham meets PAM Secretary General, asserts need to resolve crisis politically

Damascus, SANA- Speaker of the People’s Assembly Mohammad Jihad al-Laham discussed on Tuesday with the Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) Sergio Piazzi the current situation in the region and the international terrorism which the Syrian people are being exposed to.

Al-Laham pointed out that Mediterranean region is the most affected by instability in the region, particularly with the spread of terrorism due to the actions of Western countries and their interference in the internal affairs of the region’ countries.

He asserted that Syria is open to cooperation with international and regional organizations on the basis of mutual respect, respecting Syria’s sovereignty, non-interference in its internal affairs, and refraining from supporting the parties who are carrying out terrorist acts against Syria.

Combating terrorism is the first step on the road towards political solution road, al-Laham said, adding that those who want to fight terrorism should coordinate with the Syrian and Iraqi governments.

He said that the spread of Jabhet al-Nusra and ISIS terrorist organizations in Syria is happening with support from Qatar, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia and coordination between them, stressing that the Syrian people’s suffering is caused by the foolish policies of some Western and European countries that are depriving the Syrian people from food, medicine, and basic necessities by imposing an embargo on them.

For his part, Piazzi affirmed PAM’s full support to the efforts of Syrian People’s Assembly in national reconciliation and finding a political solution for the crisis in Syria.

Piazzi added that while going over UN reports, he sensed that several Western and European countries are opposed to the US plan for training and arming “moderate opposition,” and that several states are supporting a political resolution because the US plan will not lead to a solution.
