As Independence Day draws closer, Syrians reminisce over sweet memories of independence

Damascus, SANA-Syria is gearing up to celebrate Independence Day on April 17; Syria’s national day commemorating the evacuation of the last French soldier and Syria’s proclamation of full independence and the end of the French mandate of Syria on April 17, 1946.

One day before the anniversary which comes at the backdrop of a terrorist war waged against their country, the Syrians invoke the occasion as a source of inspiration, drawing parallels between the current state of affairs and the hard times that gripped Syria under the French colonial rule that is now remembered as a thing of the past.

The Syrians maintain that, despite being temporally distant from the times of French mandate, Syria’s enemies are employing the same methods that seek to bring Syria to its knees, using colorful slogans of freedom and democracy to camouflage evil intentions.

Amid a grim reality unfolding in Syria, the Independence Day triggers a flood of sweet memories of untiring struggle against colonialism that came to be crowned with victory.

With the sacrifices of ancestors who rose up against the French mandate alive in their memories, the Syrians cling tenaciously to the values of independence, refusing to cede ground to terror organizations that are part of a vicious scheme that seeks to tear Syria’s national unity asunder and reverse an honorable history of struggle.
