Copper industry profession returns to Souk al-Nahasin in Aleppo’s Old City

Aleppo, SANA- The sounds of copper hammers are frequently heard at work in Souk al-Nahasin(market)in Aleppo’s Old City declaring the return of life to this ancient souk, which has been damaged by terrorism with some coppersmiths having reopened their workshops.

Souk al-Nahasin is specialized in manufacturing and selling copper pieces of various types and remarkable forms.

SANA’s reporter interviewed Mohammed al-Hibsh, the first coppersmith to return to al-Nahasin Souk and to open his workshop, said that he inherited this profession from his ancestors hundreds of years ago and seeks to pass it to his children in order to preserve its continuity and heritage, pointing out to damage which has been caused to his shop due to terrorism, which had forced him to leave the souk.

Mohammed Yasin Nimra , owner of a shop for selling cooper said ” I returned to my shop after cleansing the souk from terrorism , and I restored it and resume production aimed at reviving the traditional profession of copper.”

He pointed out that he makes copper utensils for restaurants , shop decorations, chandeliers ,and traditional instruments that tourists like to possess.

There are also workshops in the souk specialized in making cooper lanterns and pots, and ornamentation.
