Lavrentiev: Situation in Idleb raises concern, terrorism must be eradicated

Nur Sultan, SANA – The Russian President’s Special Envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentiev, the head of the Russian delegation to the Astana talks, said that the situation in Idleb raises concern where Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist organization controls most of its territory, emphasizing that the fight against terrorism must continue until it is completely eradicated.

During a news conference on Friday, Lavrentiev said that the Turkish side has not fulfilled its obligations regarding the elimination of terrorists in Idleb, and it also is procrastinating in implementing the Sochi agreement.

He said that fighting terrorism should be the priority of everyone around the world, as  the prospect of the terrorists in Idleb going to Europe or other parts of the world is not in anyone’s interest.

Lavrentiev said the tragedy of the displaced Syrians in al-Rukban camp must be ended as soon as possible, stressing that the unilateral economic measures against Syria are illegal and should be abandoned.

He also noted that the closing statement of Astana 12 denounced the declaration of US President Donald Trump on the occupied Syrian Golan, calling on Washington to correct its position regarding this issue and respect international law.

Lavrentiev noted that US administration’s actions show contradiction, as it announced the withdrawal of its illegal forces in al-Jazeera area, then backed down from that decision.
