Damascus, SANA – The National Commission for the Syrian Science Olympiad honored on Sunday members of the Olympiad’s scientific committees and a number of excellent teachers and students.
Minister of Presidential Affairs Mansour Azzam attended the honoring ceremony as representative of Mrs. Asma al-Assad under whose auspices the ceremony was held.
Among those honored were 11 students who have made achievements in their participation in regional and international contests held in 2014.
20 teachers who are members of the central scientific committees in math, physics, chemistry, information technology and natural sciences and 25 others who won awards in the recently-held competition for teachers.
Minister of Education Hazwan al-Wazz said in a speech at the ceremony that an excellent educational process can be achieved through the excellence of both the students and teachers.
“Today’s celebration is to further consolidate the steadfastness of the education institution in Syria, among other institutions, in the face of the takfiri and obscurantist forces,” he said.
For his part, Higher Education Minister Mohammad Amer Mal-Mardini stressed that the key for building a knowledge economy is developing national experiments in the world of knowledge and producing national talents.
The Syrian Science Olympiad has already earned several awards and medals in 2014, including an (international) silver medal in informatics, a (regional) silver medal in mathematics, an (international) bronze medal in chemistry and two (regional) bronze medals in informatics, in addition to (international) appreciation certificates in mathematics and physics and another (regional) certificate in mathematics.
Last August, the Syrian Science Olympiad held competitions for teachers for the first time in the provinces of Damascus and Lattakia with 344 participants. The new experience included an elite group of well-qualified members of teaching cadres from universities and various scientific research centers in Syria, as well as specialized instructors from the Education Ministry.
