Moscow: Sochi Congress forms key step on settling crisis in Syria

Moscow, SANA – Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov affirmed on Monday that the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi will be an important step on the road to resolving the crisis in Syria, pointing out that the absence of some will not be a serious setback for the Congress.

Speaking to reporters, Peskov said that the absence of some representatives of the political process in Syria at Sochi Congress cannot frustrate or undermine its importance.

“The work that is going on is extremely complex and thorny. But holding the Congress itself is a significant step towards a political solution,” Peskov stated, adding that “one should not expect that the political reconciliation will be achieved in Sochi.”

On a relevant context, Russian President’s Special Envoy to Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev, said that the final documents of the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi will be submitted to the United Nations.

He said that one of the main issues in the Congress is finding ways for the future settlement of the crisis, indicating that the Congress will give the delegations a chance to present their positions and views on how to resolve the crisis in Syria.

The Syrian Kurds will participate in the Congress where invitations were sent to them on an individual basis, he added, pointing out that he will send letters to the UN, the international community, and international humanitarian organizations proposing their assistance in the reconstruction of Syria.

Zakharova: Publishing draft of final statement for Sochi an attempt to undermine it

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said  that publishing a draft about the closing statement of the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi is an attempt to undermine it.

As soon as the Syrians arrived in Sochi, the draft of the final statement was distributed to the media, and the telephone calls began to ask for comments on the subject, Zakharova said.

She said that there are claims that everything has been written in advance before the arrival of the participants and that all decisions have been taken, although it is unclear who took the decisions and what these decisions are.
