Peskov: Situation in Syria does not need to keep a large Russian military force in it

Moscow, SANA- Kremlin Spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said that the situation in Syria is radically changing in a way that does not need to keep a large Russian military force in it.

In a press statement on Tuesday, Peskov ruled out the possibility of a counter attack of Daesh (ISIS) terrorist organization similar to that which had happened in Tadmur (Palmyra) a year ago, adding that “today, the situation is totally different from what it was in the previous months and years.”

He refused to interpret Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Syria, Egypt and Turkey on Monday as an attempt to “fill the void” in the region and strengthen his country’s positions there, noting that this is a steady and purposeful effort within the framework of the long-standing policy of the Russian President, which aims at saving and rebuilding Syria, supporting the legitimate authority and seeking a political settlement there, as well as the development of multi-lateral relations with Turkey, Syria and Egypt.

On Monday, Putin said that he had ordered the Defense Minister and the Chief of General Staff to start the withdrawal of part of the Russian group of soldiers present in Syria.
