Riyadh, March 26 (SANA) The Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Jasem al-Budaiwi, revealed during a press briefing on Thursday that Iran has directed 85% of its missiles and drones toward Gulf countries since the outbreak of the U.S.-Israeli-Iranian war on February 28.
According to al-Budaiwi, GCC member states have been targeted by more than 5,000 Iranian missiles and drones over the past month. He provided a breakdown of the strikes, noting that the United Arab Emirates was the most targeted with over 2,000 projectiles, followed by Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, and finally the Sultanate of Oman.
Right to Self-Defense
The Secretary-General emphasized that the GCC’s right to self-defense is guaranteed under international law. “We will not accept the continuation of deception or the masking of aggression with false justifications,” al-Budaiwi stated. “Our lands will not be turned into arenas for settling international scores.”
He called on the global community to send a unified message to Tehran, urging all nations to take a clear stance against Iranian behavior that has destabilized the region and the world for decades.
Threat to Global Energy and Trade
Al-Budaiwi warned that the deteriorating situation in the Gulf carries consequences far beyond regional borders. He specifically noted the imminent threat to global energy flows, potential disruption of oil and gas exports, trade supply chains, risks to the maritime corridors that serve as the “arteries of the global economy.” and international stability as a broader breakdown of regional and international security frameworks.
This briefing follows the UN Human Rights Council’s resolution on Wednesday, which officially condemned these “unjustified” attacks on civilian sites and energy installations and demanded an immediate cessation of hostilities. As the war enters its fourth week, the Gulf remains at the epicenter of a shifting and dangerous geopolitical landscape.
