German chancellor signals alignment with U.S. on Iran policy
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz

Berlin, March 4 (SANA) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he agrees with the U.S. administration on the need for political change in Iran and expressed hope for a swift end to the conflict to limit economic impacts on Germany and Europe, particularly rising fuel prices.

Deutschlandfunk radio reported Wednesday that Merz made the remarks during a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House. He said cooperation between Europe, the United States and Israel was crucial in addressing the situation.

Trump said oil prices had risen briefly as a result of the conflict but stressed the need to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

He also criticized Britain and Spain for refusing to allow U.S. forces to use their military bases to launch attacks on Iran. Trump said London later permitted limited use of its facilities and added that he did not rule out economic sanctions against Madrid.

Joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran have continued since Saturday, while Iran has launched attacks targeting infrastructure, civilian and diplomatic facilities, as well as energy installations in several Arab countries, according to regional reports.
