Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs ,Tom Fletcher warned that more than 640,000 people in Gaza are at risk of catastrophic hunger this month, stressing that “expressions of concern don’t feed women, children, or the elderly.”
Speaking at a press conference, Fletcher outlined urgent steps to prevent famine: a ceasefire, daily aid convoys, full access for humanitarian teams, restoration of utilities, and reopening trade routes. He condemned Israeli officials’ public calls to destroy Gaza and block food aid, warning that the laws of war are being eroded.
Fletcher also highlighted a global humanitarian crisis, citing severe funding shortages and rising violence against aid workers. Only 19% of relief operations are funded this year, and over 270 humanitarian staff have been killed so far in 2025.
