Washington, March 3 (SANA) U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States is prepared for a prolonged conflict and formally notified Congress that he had ordered precision strikes on targets inside Iran.
In a letter sent to lawmakers, Trump said the February 28 strikes targeted ballistic missile sites, naval mine capabilities, air defenses and command-and-control facilities. He said the action was taken under the War Powers Resolution to protect U.S. forces and ensure the security of international navigation.
Trump said the decision followed what he described as the exhaustion of diplomatic efforts to address Iran’s “malign behavior,” adding that the threat to the United States and its allies had become “unacceptable.”
In a separate post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said U.S. ammunition stockpiles are “higher than ever” and that the country is “fully equipped and prepared to win decisively.” He added that large quantities of weapons are stored at overseas sites.
The president said the operation did not involve U.S. ground forces and was designed to minimize civilian casualties while deterring further attacks. He said the strikes aimed to safeguard U.S. interests and ensure “the free flow of maritime commerce through the Strait of Hormuz.”
However, Trump acknowledged that “the full scope and duration of potential military operations cannot be determined.”
The notification to Congress comes amid heightened tensions in the region following recent U.S.-Israeli military action against Iran.
These developments followed a large-scale military operation carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran last Saturday. Tehran responded by launching missiles and drones toward Israel and carrying out attacks in several Arab countries, marking a sharp escalation in regional tensions.
