Syrian prisoner Fares Abdul-Mawla dies in Israeli jail

Quneitra, SANA-Syrian prisoner Fares Abdul-Mawla died in an Israeli jail on Sunday while serving a sentence for allegedly building an unlicensed house in Masada area in the occupied Syrian Golan.

A couple of weeks ago, Israeli occupation authorities arrested Abdul-Mawla and sentenced him to 8 months in prison for declining to pay a fine which he considered to be succumbing to an occupying authority.

In a statement to SANA, Quneitra governor Ahmad Sheikh Abdul-Kader said the death of Abdul-Mawla inside an Israel jail is “a stain that gives the lie to those who brag about being a democracy,” urging international rights groups to probe the circumstances surrounding his death.

Abdul-Mawla was previously arrested in early 1970s. He was dismissed from his job in 1982 for leading protests denouncing the Israeli decision to annex the Golan.
