UNPF: Making positive impact on young girls’ lives

Damascus, SANA – In 2011, a United Nations resolution established 11 October as the International Day of the Girl Child (IDGC), a day designated for promoting the rights of girls and addressing the unique challenges they face.

The theme for this year’s International Day of the Girl Child, “Girls’ Progress = Goals’ Progress: A Global Girl Data Movement”, is a call for action for increased investment in collecting and analyzing girl-focused, girl-relevant and sex-disaggregated data.
Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNPF), Babatunde Osotimehin, stressed the importance of this year’s theme in paying more attention to the needs, problems and challenges which face every girl though conducting studies and researches and collecting data which enable shape policies and initiatives that positively affect the lives of millions of girls around the world.

He noted that the new State of World Population report, to be launched by UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, later this month, examines how the support we provide to adolescent girls today will determine our collective well-being tomorrow.
