Gatilov hopes the UN Security Council to support the Russian-US agreement on Syria

Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov expressed his country’s hope that the UN Security Council would voice support to its agreement with the US on Syria in order to avoid wrong interpretations of its content .

In an interview with Russian Interfax News Agency, Gatilov said that a new round of consultations in the UN Security Council will begin next week, stressing Russia’s interest in that there should be no delay to reach an accord in this regard.

He noted that if the UN Security Council approved the agreement, it will reflect positively on enhancing the cessation of hostilities agreement and reaching a political solution to the crisis in Syria, highlighting the need for holding more discussions and consultations with all the Council’s member states in order to make such decision if possible.

Gatilov stated that the adoption of a UN Security Council resolution that supports the Russian-US agreement on Syria will help avoid any wrong interpretations and unify the efforts of the international community.

The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister said that Russia and the US, in the next few days, will inaugurate the “Joint Implementation Center” in Geneva to coordinate strikes against terrorists in Syria .

Commenting on the statements made by US State Department spokesperson Mark Toner regarding the Russian-US accord to conduct air strikes against Jabhat al-Nusra, excluding ISIS, Gatilov said that the Russian and US experts should reach an agreement on this issue, adding that Jabhat al-Nusra operates in Aleppo most of the time, but in general there is a joint understanding to continue air strikes against the ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra, taking into account that these two terrorist organizations are included in the UN Sanctions List and they are excluded from the cessation of hostilities agreement.

On September 9th, Russia and the US has reached a new deal to enhance the cessation of hostilities in Syria. The agreement provides for separating terrorists from the so-called “opposition”, designating the areas where the armed terrorists will be targeted only by the Russian and the US air forces, establishing a joint Russian-US center to coordinate air attacks against terrorists and resuming political process to solve the crisis in Syria.
