Lavrov, Kerry discuss crisis in Syria and combating terrorism

Moscow, SANA – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed on Wednesday with US State Secretary John Kerry the crisis in Syria and the prospects of combating terrorism in it.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the two sides discussed during a phone call the situation in Syria, including the situation in the areas around Aleppo where the government forces with the support of the Russian army are conducting a humanitarian operation.

They also discussed the prospects of coordination between Russia and the United States in the war against terrorists in terms of the development of previous agreements, including the need to separate opposition groups that are backed by Washington from the terrorist groups that are hiding behind them and that are not involved in the cessation of hostilities agreement.

In turn, Russian President’s Special Representative for the Middle East and Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov announced that progress is being made in the ongoing talks regarding Syria in Geneva between the Russian and US experts.

Bogdanov told reporters that he thinks that work on the Geneva meetings is still ongoing and maybe there will be a meeting at a high level, adding that “we have to wait for a day or two.”
