Science Olympiad teams win 3 medals and 4 certificates in int’l mathematics and physics events

Damascus, SANA – The Syrian Science Olympiad teams earned 3 bronze medals and 4 certificates of appreciation as a result of their participation in at the 57th International Mathematical Olympiad in Hong Kong and the 47th International Physics Olympiads in Switzerland.

The new achievements add to the 46 medals and certificates won by the Olympiad teams in various international and regional events.

The three medals were won in mathematics by Mohammad Hneino, Mark Jabbour and Ghaith al-Zahili, while the certificates of appreciation were gained by Hafez al-Assad, Ahmad Mehrz and Julnar Shahoud of the mathematics team and Nabil Khalil of the physics team, who also included Ahmad Mustafa, Ahmad Bittar, Haif Ismael and Bassel al-Shawareb.

In a statement to SANA, the Head of the National Commission for the Syrian Science Olympiad Imad al-Azb described what was achieved by the Syrian Science Olympiad team at the International Mathematical Olympiad in Hong Kong as “unprecedented” where it was the first time in the history of the Syrian participations in international Olympiads that all members of the mathematics team were awarded.

In the international rankings, Syria moved up to the 48th place among 109 participating countries, jumping 6 places ahead, said al-Azb.

The Syrian Science Olympiad is now competing in the 27th International Biology Olympiad in Vietnam, where competitions will last until July 22nd. Later, Syria will participate in the International Chemistry Olympiad in Georgia and the Informatics Olympiad in Russia.
