Lavrov: Attempts to satisfy geopolitical ambitions inappropriate in the fight against terrorism

Moscow, SANA – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the fight against terrorism should be the utmost priority for everyone, stressing that attempts to satisfy someone’s geopolitical ambitions are inappropriate in the fight against ISIS and other terrorist organizations.

Speaking to participants in the Dialogue for the Future program on Monday, Lavrov said that fighting terrorism should be based on international law and under UN auspices, and without double standards.

He said that unilateral efforts, such as “the stubborn policy of replacing disfavored regimes,” are fruitless and counter-productive, and that success is only possible through collective efforts.

Lavrov noted that bringing all foreign players that have influence on the crisis in Syria together to negotiations table is a positive thing, and that forming the Syria Support Group is a success and should result in forward momentum regarding the settlement of the crisis.

The Minister said that priorities are very clear: uncompromising fight against terrorism, first of all against ISIS, Jabhat al-Nusra and other such terror organization, and simultaneous promotion of a political process with the participation of all Syrian political forces, with consideration of securing their interests.
