Al-Moallem after meeting Lavrvo: Int’l community failed to tackle terrorism

New York, SANA – Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid al-Moallem said the international community has failed to tackle terrorism due to division.

“Unfortunately, the division in the international community is clear, which is why they failed in addressing terrorism that has spread and become an international phenomenon,” said al-Moallem in statements to the Beirut-based al-Mayadeen TV channel following his meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in New York.

“In this light, we called for implementing the international Security Council’s resolutions related to combating terrorism that were issued under Chapter 7,” added al-Moallem, asking “why has the Council done nothing in relation to the countries that have not abided by those resolutions?”

He noted that his discussions with Lavrov focused on the political and military fields.

For his part, Lavrov said the great risk in overlooking the issue of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is that the number of those gunmen has exceeded thousands, and those involve people from the former Soviet Union and Russia who might return to wreak havoc in Russia.
