Damascus, SANA- The 2nd Local Championship of the Syrian Special Olympics is scheduled to kick off next Thursday and it will last for three days.
The Championship includes competitions of weightlifting, gymnastics, handball, basketball, football, ping-pong, beach ball, cycling, equitation, bocce, swimming, roller skating and athletics.
Minister of Social Affairs Kinda al-Shammat stressed that the Syrian Special Olympics will not stop despite of the war launched against Syria, wishing that the 2nd Local Championship will be a success.
Al-Shammat, speaking at a press conference on Sunday at the General Sports Federation “GSF”, referred to the great attention paid by the Syrian Government to the people with special needs through providing a suitable atmosphere for them in a way that would contribute to the integration of this spectrum of society, shedding lights on the importance of participating in the international championships.
For his part, GSF Chairman Maj. Gen. Mwafaq Jum’aa highlighted the importance of the achievements scored by Syrian Special Olympics team at the 2015 Special Olympics World Games in the American city of Los Angeles last July.
He indicated that harvesting a number of gold, silver and bronze medals in the World Games by the Syrian team sends a message to the whole world that the people with special needs represent an important segment of the Syrian society and they were able to participate in the World Games despite of all obstacles which had face them.
