Mosaic template adorning Umayyad Mosque restored

Damascus, SANA – Mosaic template making up the main façade of the Umayyad Mosque has been restored after sustaining damage in a terrorist mortar attack last November.

Some parts of the mosaic template dates back to the 11th century, while other parts are dated between the 12th and 13th centuries.

The restoration works for the damaged parts of the template were carried out by national cadres from the General Directorate of Archeology and Museums.

In the restoration process, experts charged with documenting tasks came to know the very bad situation of the mosaic template adorning the sanctuary of the mosque.

Therefore, a joint committee was formed including cadres from the ministries of Culture and Awqaf (Religious Endowments) and the Archeology and Museums Directorate with the aim to quickly intervene to maintain and restore the template.

The severely damaged template had not been restored after a 1893 fire in the Umayyad Mosque, according to expert Kumait Abdullah at the Archeology Directorate.

The façade mosaic features shapes of buildings and trees, suiting the pattern of other mosaic templates decorating the mosque.
