Tartous, SANA-A mosque bearing the name of “Virgin Mary” was inaugurated in the coastal city of Tartous, setting a precedent in the Arab and Muslim worlds.

Minister of Awqaf (Religious Endowments) Mohammad Abdul-Sattar al-Sayyed said it is the first time in the Arab and Muslim world that a mosque is named after Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus Christ, which he said embodies the true message of building mosques that calls for amity and fraternity.

“Damascus, particularly its Grand Umayyad Mosque, is the place where the Islamic culture originated,” added the minister, deploring the current situation that saw ultra-extremists demolish places of worship in Syria.

Representative of the Maronite Patriarchate in Tartous and Lattakia Antoine Deeb said the event is a propitious gesture that shows that Islam and Christianity share one sublime message of love and peace.

The Virgin Mary is held in high regard in Islam which bestowed on her several names including The Virgin Mary, Mary, the Pure, Mariam. She has a prominent, significant, and revered role in the Quran and Islam.

Syria has always prided itself on its religious diversity and the fraternal ties binding Muslims and Christians who have lived there side by side throughout history.
