Two Syrian winners of WHO regional competition honored

Damascus, SANA- Health Minister Dr. Nizar Yazigi, Education Minister Dr. Hazwan al-Waz and Representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) Elizabeth Hoff honored on Thursday two Syrian students who won an art competition for schools for the organization’s Eastern Mediterranean countries.

Yamama al-Malla and Amira Kassem had won the third and fourth places in the competition in which about 40 students from Syrian schools had participated. The contest was organized on the occasion of the World Health Day.

In a statement following the honoring, Dr.al-Waz underlined the role of such competitions in raising health awareness among students to help them make a positive change in their environmental behavior and improve their daily habits.

For his part, Yazigi pointed out that the health ministry seeks to raise children’s awareness about the importance of following healthy habits and behaviors, hailing the accomplishment of the two students who demonstrated the outstanding competence of the Syrian children despite the challenges of the current war.

In turn, Hoff said that the two students had fully absorbed the basic health messages highlighted by the theme of World Health Day for 2015 which is “Food Safety”, indicating that their achievement reflects a deep understanding of food safety issues and the role of the individual in health maintenance.

Hoff described Syria’s participation in the events of the World Health Day as remarkable.

The World Health Day is a global health awareness day celebrated every year on 7 April, under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Food safety is the theme of the World Health Day 2015. It is an essential component of global health and sustainable agricultural and economic development.
