Damascus, SANA Thousands of Syrian Armenians participated on Sunday evening in a candle march from al-Zablatani area to St. Mar Sarkis Armenian Orthodox Church in Bab Sharki, Damascus, under the motto Remember and Demand, marking centennial anniversary of Armenian Genocide perpetrated by Ottomans.

The Armenian Genocide, included acts of killing, slaughtering and genocide of more than two million people at the hands of the Ottomans, happened between 1915 and 1923.

Participants lit candles and raised placards stressing their commitment to the rights of the Armenian people.

The candles were laid down near the cornerstone of the memorial of the Saints Martyrs of the Armenian genocide at the Square which carries their names in Damascus.

A statement was recited, on behalf of the Armenian people, through which they called upon the future generation to maintain the national heritage of the Armenian people and to struggle for restoring their legitimate rights.
The statement urged the UN member-states and the international organizations to restore the historical justice and to respect the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide, calling on Turkey to admit and condemn the genocide carried out by the Ottoman Empire.

The participation of thousands of people in the march reflects a unified national stance against terrorism, killing and criminal acts, Armash Nalbandian, Armenian Archbishop of Damascus in the diocesan headquarters in Damascus told SANA, asserting that through his support to the terrorist organizations in Syria, Erdogan repeats what his antecedents had done a hundred years ago.

For his part, Armenian Ambassador in Damascus Arshak Poladian said that the centennial opens a new stage of struggle to reach justice, asserting that the right of the Armenian people has no status of limitations.

In a relevant context, priest Gabriel David of the Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate, pointed out that Erdogan’s regime repeats the same massacres through his offensive against Syria, indicating that the armed terrorist groups which perpetrated the Armenian genocide, were supported by Erdogan’s ancestors, are the same which are perpetrating massacres against the Syrian people.

On Sunday, the cornerstone of a memorial of the saints of the martyrs of the Armenian Genocide was laid in Bab Touma square which carries their names in Damascus.
