Communications Ministry, WFP inaugurate a scientific lab, Damascus Countryside

Damascus Countryside, SANA-A science laboratory been established by Communications and Technology Ministry in cooperation with the World Food Programme (WFP) was inaugurated on Thursday.

The inauguration ceremony was at the headquarters of the General Organization for Remote Sensing in Damascus countryside.

 Conducting specialized courses for workers in the ministries to enhance food security, study the effects of climate change, preserve the environment, and estimate the damages resulting from such changes are all behind the purpose of the laboratory ,according to Minister of Communications and Technology, Iyad al-Khatib.

The laboratory aims also to hold courses at the regional level in the agricultural, environmental and geological fields related to remote sensing, and to modernize the authority’s infrastructure of software and equipment, al-Khatib added.

WFP Representative and Country Director, Kenneth Crossley, referred to importance of such laboratory in training activities related to climate challenges, developing human capabilities through training courses in the field of remote sensing and geographic information system, achieving food security, protecting livelihoods, as well as reducing the effects of climate change on the environment and estimating damage in urban areas.
