Damascus, SANA – The 9th general conference of the General Sports Federation in Syria kicked off on Sunday at Al-Jala’a Sports Complex in Damascus.
The conference was attended by Prime Minister Wael al-Halaqi, Speaker of the People’s Assembly Mohammad Jihad al-Lahham, and Assistant Regional Secretary of al-Baath Part Hilal Hilal.
Participants in the conference said that the challenges facing Syrian sport in light of the crisis require exerting more efforts and overcoming the obstacles affecting the development of sports, noting that Syrian athletes never stopped competing and winning medals in international competitions despite the current circumstances.
In a statement following the conference, Premier al-Halaqi affirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the sports sector due to its important social impact.
The conference’s opening ceremony included athletic performances and demonstrations by athletes and students from the Sports Institute.
The three-day conference includes meeting for the various Federation committees, discussion of the conference’s reports and suggestions, and electing the Federation’s central council.
