Thousands evacuated in Sydney amid threat of flooding

Canberra, SANA- Australian authorities today issued orders to evacuate thousands of residents southwest of Sydney, Australia’s largest city, due to torrential rains on the east coast and the possibility of flooding and landslides.

“Heavy rainfall is likely to lead to flooding and landslides along the east coast region to the north and south of Sydney in the state of New South Wales, with more rain expected over the next few days,” Reuters quoted the Bureau of Meteorology as saying.

The state’s emergency service has warned residents of the southern Sydney region that staying in the area is dangerous due to the prevailing weather conditions, as it is difficult for rescue teams to intervene, as well as the possibility of power, water and other essential services outages.

For his part, Australian Defense Secretary Richard Marles said that the Australian government provided the state with one hundred soldiers and two helicopters to assist in any rescue operations.
